outside your own window

Dear Diary, Last night I took pictures after dark and all I could seem to get was the snow flakes. It was interesting being outside my own house and looking in with the lights on. I wanterd to capture it on film but it would not work out. It was early evening after a long storm that lasted over 24 hours. I was wandering around in the snow, taking it all in, just glad to get a bit of fresh air, to be outside looking in at my own life. Sometimes when I drive by at night I see through my kitchen window, and in the yellow light,  their is a crucifix above one of the doors.  It is the one that was above my parents bed all my life but somehow when I drive by my own house and look in at night it looks unfamiliar. We live our own lives, ans at times are not observant of them. We settle into what we see, what we smell, what we own and it becomes familiar, familial. As much as we appreciate it, we cannot help but take it for granted in some way.  We would not really be living a relaxed comfortable life if everytime we walked into our kitchen we saw it with fresh eyes. Nice thought for a creativity book, but can we keep up? But when you do see it with fresh eyes for whatever reason, when you do get to see it from a different perspective for whateber reason, it is a good time to really look, and gather up your surrounding in that surreal moment. Don’t ignore those moments, breathe them in, because it feels a bit like, Peggy Sue, in the movie, where she comes back to her teenaged life, after havbing been grown up for years. There is that sweetness of appreciation that you can’t always draw up even if you are a generally grateful person.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments. I really enjoyed the stories about your grandmother’s hooks, and knowing who was reading. Your comments make the diary more interesting keep them coming.

  1. I loved your entry today. It reminds me of how much I enjoy being outside at night and look into my own windows. Driving home at night, I do the same thing; look at peoples’ homes from an outside perspective and see what emotions it stirs…warm and inviting, brash and cold, small and tidy.

  2. Hi Diane,

I’m just spending time with you — looking over the newsletter, new shopping website, blog, gallery…all your work that always inspires me. I’ve had a very busy holiday season, and need very much to get back to work hooking. Your comment about hooking keeping you busy which puts your mind at ease reminded me of what I must do to calm down during this cold, wintery time. Thank you for that, and for all your other thoughts that stir up my creativity.
